Daimonology of the PGM: A Complete Course in Theory and Practice

This new course on the Greco-Egyptian magical papyri explores the many types of daimon in the PGM, based on the original research and methodology developed by the instructor over years of engagement with these ancient documents. In eight weekly sessions, we will examine all the major types of daimon in the PGM, exploring the theoretical and historical context of each type. Each class session will also involve a deep dive into one or more ritual texts from the PGM that best exemplify each type of daimon. The 8-week course begins July 1, 2023.

Ancient Greek Magic

This course is designed for beginners to the ancient Greek language who have a strong interest in the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM) and related ancient traditions. Each week, we will examine an ancient Greek ritual text, analyzing it together line-by-line, with a focus on both pronunciation and translation. This weekly exercise will be supplemented with audio and video recordings, original word-for-word translations, and (optional) homework to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary of the PGM. A private community will allow you to interact with the instructor and other students via text and voice chat. The 10-week course began September 17, 2022.

Magic in Hieroglyphs

This course is designed for beginners to the ancient Egyptian language who have a strong interest in ancient Egyptian religion and magic. Each week, we will examine an ancient Egyptian ritual text in hieroglyphic script, analyzing it together word-by-word, with a focus on transliteration, translation, and conventional pronunciation. This weekly exercise will be supplemented with audio and video recordings, original word-for-word translations, and (optional) homework to reinforce the grammar, vocabulary, and writing systems of Egyptian magical texts. A private community will allow you to interact with the instructor and other students via text and voice chat. The 8-week course will be offered again in late 2023.

Ancient Coptic Magic

Each week for 8 weeks, we will examine an ancient Coptic text, analyzing it together line-by-line, with a focus on both pronunciation and translation. These weekly classes will be supplemented by audio and video recordings, original word-for-word translations, and (optional) homework to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary of ancient Coptic magical texts. This 8-week course will be offered again in 2024.
