Interlinear Magic: An Annotated Anthology of the Greco-Egyptian Magical Papyri is the forthcoming book by Brian P. Alt, PhD. Interlinear Magic presents 60 exemplary ritual-texts from Roman Egypt, providing new original translations, historical commentary, and practical insights for students of the Greco-Egyptian Magical Papyri (commonly abbreviated PGM). Unlike previous translations of this ancient material, which include little or no historical context that helps one understand these ritual-texts, Interlinear Magic is full of supplemental material, including:
A 106-page historical introduction, covering a multitude of topics directly relevant to the study of the PGM. For a list of topics, please see the Table of Contents.
The ancient Greek texts and English translations alternate line-by-line, enabling the reader to quickly find Greek passages. All 60 chapters have both this interlinear translation, as well as an additional English translation.
Each chapter also features a brief introduction and explanatory notes, while each of the first 12 chapters also includes an extensive commentary.
A supplemental PDF (the “Digital Supplement”) of 100+ pages will be released after the print book has been shipped, free to those who have purchased a print copy. This will include additional topics cut from the General Introduction, an extensive symbolic commentary, and tools to aid ancient Greek language-learning.
About the Author: Brian P. Alt holds a PhD in Religious Studies with a PhD minor in Egyptology (Indiana University, 2020) and an MA in Classical Studies (University of Nebraska, 2009). His historical research focuses on Egypt during the Greco-Roman period (approximately 330 BCE – 400 CE) and examines the intersections of philosophy and religion, theology and popular piety, with additional emphases on ritual studies, Greco-Egyptian cultural hybridity, and the theurgy of Iamblichus and later Platonism.
